アラスカ:2007年夏

アラスカハイウエイの初日。早朝は雷も鳴っていたが、出発時（８ＡＭ）には雨が上がる。ＢＣ州道９７号線がアラスカハイウエイで、本日の目的地フォートネルソンに向けて出発。

所謂アラスカハイウエイは、ドーソンクリークのマイル０地点からからアラスカ第二の街フェアバンクスまでの1523マイルであるが、正式にはデルタジャンクションまで（1420マイル）とされている。

1996年に全工程舗装道路として完成し、年間を通じての走行が可能になった。約300マイル毎に街があり、宿泊・ガスの心配は無い。

初のアラスカハイウエイへの乗り入れで若干興奮気味。何しろ、十年以上恋焦がれていた道なのだから。

ドーソンクリークを出ると広大な風景が広がる。フォートセントジョンでガス補給。リッター辺り20キロは確保している。

フォートセントジョンを過ぎる辺りから雨が降り出す。時折強くなり視界が悪くなる。標高が高くなるにつれて気温も下がり始め、最低は４４Ｆまで下がった。風が弱いのが救い。

フォートネルソンの手前60マイル位でようやく雨があがり一息。休憩していると、いきなり蚊に刺された。アラスカは蚊の襲撃がすごいとのことであるが、早くもその予兆か。

フォートネルソンに着いたのは３ＰＭと少し早いが先が長いことも考え無理をせず、予定通り同地泊とする。ブルーベルモーテル（Ｃ＄９０）。

サウスダコダから来ているゴールドウイングのトライクで大型トレーラーを引っ張っている2組の夫婦が同じ宿に入ってきて、ＧＳの隣にバイクを駐車した。ＧＳも大きなバイクだが、ゴールドウイングのトライクと並ぶと小型バイクに見えてしまう。

Today is the first day on the Alaska Highway. Tough thundering in the early morning, it was dried up at the time of starting (8AM). The Alaska Highway is BC state highway 79, which stretches from the Mile Zero post of Dawson Creek to Fairbanks, Alaska (1523 miles). The official end of the Alaska Highway is recorded at Delta Junction (1420 miles). The highway construction was completed and became the all-section paved road in 1996, making year-round trip possible.

The excitement came once getting started on the highway, as this moment has been waited for more than a decade. Leaving Dawson Creek, a big expanse of scenery was observed, riding at steady speed to Fort St. John and getting gas. After Fort St. John rain was coming and tempter also got down to 44F of today's lowest record. It was light wind, which helped rather safe ride. It became dried up around 60 miles before Fort Nelson. During a short rest, mosquito bite bothered me, which would be "good" symptom on the notorious Alaskan mosquitoes.

Arrival at Fort Nelson was rather early at 3 PM. Considering the long way ride, staying as schedule should be a wise choice. Decent Blue Bell Motel costs C$90.

A couple of American from South Dakota arrived at the motel, those riding Honda Goldwing Trike with large trailer. Parking with those big staff, my GS looks like a "mini bike".
